It’s National Accessibility Week, a time to recognize the importance of creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels welcome. At the Edmonton Valley Zoo, accessibility isn’t just a feature – it’s a priority. We’re proud to highlight the steps we’ve taken to ensure a more inclusive experience for all our guests, with a commitment to creating joyful experiences for all.
Did you know? Our team can customize school programs and guided tours to meet groups’ unique ability needs. And we also waive admission for care providers accompanying guests with support needs!
KultureCity Certified!
The Edmonton Valley Zoo is a Certified Sensory Inclusive venue! Thanks to our amazing partnership with KultureCity, we’ve taken real steps to support those with sensory needs. Our team is trained to recognize and assist with sensory overload. Plus, you can grab a sensory bag at Guest Services filled with tools like noise-canceling headphones and fidget toys to make your visit even more comfortable. It’s about making sure everyone can enjoy the wonders of wildlife in their own way.
Explore with Confidence: Social Narratives to the Rescue!
Planning a trip can be overwhelming, especially for those with sensory sensitivities. That’s why we offer online Social Narratives – think of them as visual guides to your zoo adventure! These narratives walk you through everything from entering the gates to spotting your favorite animals to some of the smells you will encounter. By knowing what to expect, we hope to ease anxiety and set the stage for a fantastic day.

Wheels for Everyone: Accessible Rentals
We know getting around is a big part of enjoying your visit, especially for a site that’s as large as our zoo. We’ve got you covered with accessible rentals. Need a little help navigating our paths? Our scooter rentals are perfect for making the zoo experience comfortable and enjoyable. Bringing the little ones? Single and double stroller rentals are available to make your adventure a breeze. We want to make sure everyone can explore at their own pace and in their own way.
Sensory Friendly Evenings
We recognize the need to do more to meet the needs of all our guests. Therefore, Edmonton Valley Zoo has made the decision to focus on making the zoo accessible to everyone on a more regular basis. Our new Sensory Friendly evenings – to be held June 17, July 15, and August 26 from 5-7 p.m. – will help those who can feel a little overwhelmed by a visit to the zoo. During these nights, non-essential lights throughout the zoo will be turned off and the carousel will be running without lights and music. Sensory kits and our zoo’s social story will be available.
Join Us in Celebrating Inclusion
During National Accessibility Week, we invite all guests to learn more about our accessibility initiatives and how we’re working to make the zoo a welcoming space for everyone. Stop by Guest Services to learn more, pick up a sensory bag, or ask questions about our accessible features. We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the wonder of wildlife – and we’re committed to making that possible!
